For Mental Health Awareness Month (October) and Mental Health Week (5-12 October) the Mind Australia Group is celebrating the influence of people with lived experience of mental health challenges, personally or as a family member, and lived expertise across its organisations.

The Mind Australia Group, which comprises Mind Australia, One Door Mental Health and the Haven Foundation, is highlighting the value of using insights from lived experience when supporting others with their mental health challenges and the central role of lived expertise in transforming the mental health system.

Our social media campaign profiles Mind Australia Group staff and how they bring their lived experience into their work, acknowledging the unique ability to not only connect with and inspire people who come to us for support, but also to drive reform and meaningful change across the mental health system.

Staff harness their lived experience across the three organisations, like Pedro, a Mind peer practitioner at the Crisis Support Space in Cairns (QLD), and Daniela, a One Door Carer Advocate in Griffith (NSW).

Members of Mind’s Lived Experience division also discuss the challenge of influencing existing systems to achieve a truly person centred, lived-experience led mental health system.

Mind Australia Group CEO Gill Callister said Mind and One Door have strongly aligned values and a shared commitment to recovery and making a positive difference for the people we support, underpinned by a passionate belief in the lived experience movement.

“One Door and Mind Australia came together with a shared vision to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of people, families and communities across Australia. Our collective purpose is deeply grounded in our commitment to providing comprehensive services driven by lived expertise, and ensuring that lived experience perspectives are at the forefront of all our practice, thinking and workforce design,” Ms Callister said.

“We are proud to celebrate our lived experience staff, and their valuable contributions, for Mental Health Awareness Month and Mental Health Week 2024.”

The social media campaign will be live during Mental Health Week and can be found on the following channels:
