Mind Australia has opened a new youth residential rehabilitation service for young people experiencing mental health challenges in Caboolture and Redcliffe, Queensland.

The new Caboolture Youth Residential Rehabilitation (YRR) service, funded by the Queensland Government, provides 24/7 care and long-term support to young people aged 16 to 21 whose mental health is impacting their capacity to lead independent lives.

YRR is based in the heart of a community where individuals can stay in the YRR program for up to 12 months, receiving psychosocial support in a home-like community setting. The service provides intensive individual and group-based support that promotes resilience, interpersonal skills, life skills and a greater sense of being able to make sound decisions, including healthy lifestyle choices.

Caboolture YRR includes four bedrooms and shared communal areas including a kitchen, living room, and garden spaces. There is also overnight accommodation for staff to ensure young people have access to support, if they require it, 24/7.

Queensland Assistant Minister for Mental Health Donna Kirkland said Caboolture YRR takes a fresh, innovative approach to youth mental health services.

“This initiative offers long-term, community-based residential mental health care for young Queenslanders to recover from mental illness in a safe, home-like environment,” Assistant Minister Kirkland said.

Mind already has an established range of youth services in Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia, and in New South Wales delivered through One Door Mental Health. This includes four existing youth residential rehabilitation services in Annadale and Aitkenvale (Queensland), RosannaTraralgon and Wodonga (Victoria).

Mind Australia CEO Gill Callister said YRR’s psychosocial support helps young people experiencing mental health challenges be able to take part in community, social and economic life.

“Youth residential recovery services help young people take meaningful, positive steps in their mental health recovery journey. The targeted support they provide at a crucial time in a young person’s development of key life skills and is instrumental in preventing life-long mental health challenges,” Ms Callister said.

“As one of the largest providers of community-managed psychosocial services in Australia, Mind is proud to be chosen to provide this important service that will benefit young people in the Caboolture region as well as their families, carers and supporters. We commend the Queensland Government for making this service possible.”

Mind Executive Director Queensland Operations, Denise Cumming, said working collaboratively with partner organisations and agencies was integral to providing positive outcomes for young people.

“The success of these services is underpinned by strong partnerships between clinical mental health services, the Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs Branch, and the Community Services Funding Branch – funding by Queensland Government – working together to offer integrated, developmentally appropriate, and person-centred, safe quality care.”
