A partnership built on shared values and collaboration is the key driver of positive outcomes for people who access support at Rockingham Step Up Step Down in Western Australia.

Mind Australia partners with South Metropolitan Health Service to deliver the Rockingham Step Up Step Down service - an alternative to hospital admission that provides early intervention care and a range of recovery focused supports.

Mind provides psychosocial supports that help people with mental health challenges manage daily activities, rebuild and maintain connections, engage with education and employment, and participate fully in the community.

South Metropolitan Health Service’s clinical staff provide assessments and psychiatrist reviews, medication support and help refer people to the necessary continuation of support once they leave Rockingham Step Up Step Down.

Representatives of both organisations recently reflected on the reasons for the success of the seven-year partnership.

James Porter, Community Mental Health Program Manager at South Metropolitan Health Service, says the partnership has grown from strength to strength each year because each organisation’s expertise is honoured.

“I think our biggest success is how well our services complement each other. This synergy translates to positive client outcomes,” he said.

“Mind has a strong recovery focus and Peel and Rockingham Kwinana Mental Health Services focusses on health and wellbeing. Together, this ensures clients receive holistic, comprehensive and person-centred care.”

Mind General Manager Western Australian Operations, Pradeep Satya, says the two organisations complement and learn from each other to provide a holistic breadth of services for people experiencing severe mental health challenges.

“Sustaining a positive and strong relationship requires effective collaboration and improved linkages between the two organisations. With Mind and Rockingham Health Service, meaningful partnerships exist at all levels; we have formal service agreements, established governance committees and consumer and carer groups,” Pradeep said.

“I believe both organisations have ‘one team’ approaches. This includes sharing knowledge and skills, improving local processes by addressing and removing practice barriers, sharing contemporary and best practice models and constantly evaluating our service delivery methods.

“By having shared values and purpose we are able to deliver service that is safe and welcoming. Service that ensures consumers are listened to, treated with respect, given choice and control about their engagement and they are encouraged to have a voice.”

Mind’s recently completed Prevention and Recovery Care (PARC) and Step Up Step Down (SUSD) Outcomes Measures report demonstrates consistently positive improvements for people who use these services.

The report, which includes more than 1,000 responses, provides an overview of service users’ psychological distress, recovery and feedback.

Some key findings were:

  • residents had a significant reduction in psychological distress and a significant improvement in recovery between entry and exit
  • residents had a high likelihood of recommending Mind services to family and friends
  • carers were exceptionally satisfied with services received at Mind.
